We reflect on the AAYC 2008-09 season
"Fantastic", "Such a polished, beautiful group!" and "The best concert ever" - recent comments from our audience.
Sunday, November 9 at 4 p.m.: Descant Choir joined Ann Arbor's own popular singing duo, GEMINI, at the Michigan Theater in the Ann Arbor Symphony's Family Concert entitled The Orchestra is Here to Play. What a fun concert! Descant kids did so well, hand motions and all!
Sunday, December 7 at 4 p.m.: AAYC's Winter Concert lifted audience spirits for the season in the warm atmosphere of Bethlehem United Church of Christ (423 S.Fourth Ave.) with wonderful performances by both Concert and Descant Choirs. "Wow!", Beautifully directed", "They seem to improve each year," - some comments from our audience.
Tuesday, December 9 at 7:30 p.m.: Descant Choir joined the Moscow Ballet for a performance of the NUTCRACKER- a seasonal all-time favorite - at the Michigan Theater. The Choir sang in the lobby before the performance and then participated in Act II of the ballet. There was quite a buzz about the singing from our kids! Well done everyone!
December 11-14: Concert Choir was honored to be invited to participate in the Detroit Symphony Orchestra's four performances of Carl Orff's CARMINA BURANA at the Max M. Fisher Music Center in Detroit, for the debut of the DSO's new conductor, Leonard Slatkin. These exciting performances received standing ovations and here is what the Detroit Free Press had to say: "Kudos as well to the Ann Arbor Youth Chorale, whose young singers had their music so completely in hand that they didn't need scores." This was an experience to be remembered for a lifetime!
Saturday, January 24 at 8 p.m.: Three Concert Choir students, trained by conductor Bonnie Kidd, participated in the Ann Arbor Symphony's semi-staged performance of Mozart's MAGIC FLUTE. Our three 'spirits' in this enchanting opera shone on stage. The Ann Arbor News wrote: "..members of the Ann Arbor Youth Chorale did a great job in the roles described as Three Youngsters, singing in German as if born to it." And Maestro Lipsky said, "The AAYC kids performance was magnificent! Bravo!!"
Wednesday, March 11, Concert Choir enjoyed an evening of songs in a concert with the St. Mary's College Choir (Notre Dame, Indiana) and Huron High School's Bel Canto Choir. This concert took place in the wonderful acoustic space at Bethlehem United Church of Christ, Ann Arbor.
Saturday, March 28 Descant Choir sang for the grand re-opening of the University of Michigan's Museum of Art. This was a wonderful opportunity.
On Saturday, May 9 we held our final concert of the season. Both of our choirs performed from their spring repertoire. Once again our talented youngsters impressed their audience!

What we did summer 2008!
Wow! What a time students had at our Summer Choral Academy at Concordia University in July. Here are some comments: "My daughter learned so much in two weeks and had so much fun!"; "What a great time! Our children loved every minute of it! - from parents; and "Everyone here rocks! I really want to come back!"; and "I loved singing, dancing, learning instruments and making art," - from students. Be sure not to miss this opportunity in summer 2009! Scholarships are available based on need.
